About Me

Aucklanders can watch the America’s Cup from shore!

November 4, 2020 by megan Leave a Comment

I don’t know if you’re a sailing fanatic, but I do know that you’ve probably thought it was a bit galling that our taxes and rates money went into putting the America’s Cup on, only to hear that the international teams had ganged up on Emirates Team New Zealand and had the course moved so far from the city we might as well have been living in Wellington!

Well thank goodness for reason and the tenacity of Grant Dalton, as the court has over ruled the international contenders when Ports of Auckland looked at the shipping schedule and said, duh – the borders are closed so there are no cruises coming into Auckland any more and we can twiddle the cargo ships schedule so they won’t be affected.

So if you’re a boatie you’ll be able to see the races on the water from Takapuna to Mission Bay and out to Waiheke including islands like Motutapu and Motuihe. If you’re a land lubber you could scoot up Bastion Point or even along the beaches of Mission Bay and St Heliers.

I would expect big screens will be up at these beaches, but stay tuned and I shall tell you more as we get closer to racing when the Prada Cup begins in January 2021.

Oh and if you want a primo room to watch all the goings on at Team New Zealand’s base, check out this view from a corner room at the Park Hyatt Hotel in the Wynyard Quarter!
